Legal Defense Plan

The Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police (MNFOP) is delighted to reveal that we have implemented improvements to our Legal Defense Plan (add link which needs updating), effective November 1, 2024. We have entered into an agreement with a new law firm, Caplan & Tamburino, for our Minnesota off-duty legal defense plan (LDP). In parallel with the Minnesota off-duty LDP, we have forged a partnership with the National FOP Lodge, Legal Defense Plan, for on-duty incidents, and retired/conceal and carry coverage. This provides our members with the opportunity to select meticulously and suitably from a range of options that best cater to their legal defense needs.
Our State Legal Plan continues to provide coverage for off-duty criminal, administrative/employment civil proceedings. Our legal defense plan remains the only plan in Minnesota that covers both on and off-duty incidents for criminal charges. A significant advantage of partnering with the National Plan for on-duty legal defense is that there will no longer be a limit on the related experts and expenses. It is noteworthy that experts in officer-involved shootings have become increasingly necessary while being remarkably expensive. Furthermore, the National Plan also extends coverage for appeals.
Please refer to the links below for coverage documents for both the National Legal Defense Plan and our State Plan. As an organization, we strive to provide you with unparalleled coverage as a police officer. To ensure that our members make optimal choices in selecting the appropriate plan that fits their individual requirements, we need to differentiate the National and the State Plan payment. Any member in good standing is eligible to enroll in the plan. Your coverage commences once your local lodge application has been received and approved by the Grand Lodge, and payment has been processed.
If you participate in a group plan where your enrollment in LDP is paid by your agency or union, you do not need to modify anything. We will work with your group to produce a continuation of coverage.
Provided below are the links for various à la carte options. You must click on each link that you wish to participate in and sign up for each plan.
If you have any inquiries, please contact 2nd Vice-President and LDP Committee Chair, Bryan Klassen.
